  • Instant Pot
  • Blender

  • 2 tsp Sesame Oil
  • 2 sprigs Curry Leaves
  • 15 medium Shallots , peeled and chopped
  • 4 medium Green Chillies*
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1 tsp Coriander Seeds
  • 3/4 tsp Salt , adjust to taste
  • 1/2 cup Horse Gram Lentils , (100g)
  • 1 1/2 cups Water

Instructions

  • Place the inner pot inside the Instant Pot. Set it to SAUTÉ mode for 15 minutes.
  • Add the sesame oil to the Instant Pot and wait until it gets hot. Then add in the curry leaves; let it sizzle.
  • Next add in the chopped shallots. Sauté until it turns translucent an soft. Once it does, add the green chillies and sauté for a minute.
  • Add the whole dry spices (cumin seeds and coriander seeds) to this and stir to heat it up. Then add the turmeric powder and salt; saute for a few seconds.
  • Immediately after, add the lentils and water. Close the Instant Pot and SEAL it. Set it to PRESSURE COOK mode for 20 minutes.
  • After the cooking time, Quick Release and open the Instant Pot. Transfer it all to a blender. Let it cool down a bit and the blender until almost* smooth.
  • Serve it with some cooked white rice and rasam!

Notes

  • You can use any other vegetable oil you like. I have always used unrefined flavorful oil like coconut oil or sesame or peanut oil.
  • Green Chillies are fiery and pungent Indian peppers. These are easily available at any Indian store.
  • Horse Gram Lentils are really nutritious lentils native to South India. You can find this online or in Indian stores.
  • You can use regular brown lentils in place of horse gram lentils.
  • Since the ingredients are so minimal, ensure that you use all the ingredients mentioned above.
  • The texture has to be something in between coarse to smooth.
