What goes into these:
Super simple ingredients go into making these garlic knots; ingredients that you’ll already have in your pantry. If you’ve seen my homemade pizza dough recipe you’ll see that it is the exact same recipe I’ve used here. So it’s just pizza dough rolled up nicely and brushed with garlic and butter mixture.
The topping is this really easy as well. You just need a few garlic cloves. I am always inclined to use more garlic; I like the roast/burnt/crisp garlic. But you can stop at 6 medium garlic cloves. With the garlic as the star ingredient, the next important ingredient is obviously le beurre aka the butter.
You can use salted butter for this. I never buy salted butter so I just add some extra salt to the mixture. You can just stop with butter and garlic but I like to add some Olive Oil. There is nothing that beats the flavor of olive oil in pizzas so I do like its flavor in garlic knots with pizza dough too. That with the butter and garlic brings out the most amazing flavor in the knots all the while making this the best garlic knots recipe.

You can just eat them as such, it actually tastes delicious considering it has garlic flavor and enough salt with the taste from the butter and olive oil of course. Buy some marinara sauce or pizza sauce or make your own homemade marinara and homemade pizza sauce to dip the garlic knots in. It is just delish!
Although, because of the crisp texture you can serve them with soft or creamy dishes like beans, salad, baked creamy chicken, and so on. Garlic knots with pizza dough are super perfect for picnics, at least that’s when I make it. I make it a day ahead of a picnic or travel. Also, these are perfect for party food.

Are garlic knots vegan?
No, garlic knots are not vegan but they can be made vegan if you use vegan butter in place of regular butter or you can substitute the butter with olive oil. However, these are vegetarian from the dough to the topping.

The topping mixture:

The dough:
- Add 1/2 cup all-purpose flour to a mixing bowl. To that add the other ingredients: instant yeast, sugar, salt, 1/2 cup water, and olive oil in this order. Stir to combine. Cover with lid or cling film. Set aside for 10 minutes.
- After 10 minutes, add the rest of the flour to the mixing bowl. Mix and form a dough. IF* needed, add the extra 1/4 cup water. The dough should be tacky and soft.
- Oil the bowl and place the dough back into it. Cover with lid and let the dough rise for 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
- After the dough has doubled, punch it down, form it into a ball and then divide it into 8 portions. Roll each portion into approximately 8-10-inch ropes/logs.
Shaping them:
- To make the knots, hold the logs at each end, bring the right side over the other leaving a loop in the middle. Then simply make an OVERHAND knot. Tuck the left-out edges underneath.
- Repeat with the other portions. Arrange it on a baking tray lined with parchment paper leaving an inch gap between each.
- Cover it with a cling film, loosely. Let it rise for 30 more minutes.

Baking the Garlic Knots:
- Preheat the oven for 10 minutes at 400 F / 200 C.
- Dip* a pastry brush or a silicone brush into the topping mixture and generously brush the butter mixture over the knots.
- Place the tray in the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the tray and brush the knots again with the butter mixture.
- Put the tray back in the oven. Turn to broil mode and bake for 10 more minutes*.
- Finally, remove from the oven once done. Let it cool down a bit. Serve it warm with Homemade Pizza Sauce! Enjoy!
Notes:
- You can use leftover Pizza Dough from the previous day. Tightly wrap it up in cling film and store it in the refrigerator. In this case, you can directly skip to the shaping part. Shape and let it rise for 30 minutes.
- Water for the dough: The water needed for the dough depends on the time and place and the type of flour. So it might take anywhere between 1/2 cup to 3/4 cups. So add the additional 1/4 cup by the tablespoon as needed.
- Brushing the topping: As you dip the brush into the mixture, ensure to spoon the garlic mixture using the brush. This is to make sure the garlic bits get on the garlic knots.
- Baking: During the last 5 minutes, turn up the heat to 480 F / 250 C on broil mode to get that nice browning here and there. But do keep an eye during these 5 minutes to avoid too much browning.
